14.1. General information, diagnostics of malfunctions

General information

The BMW E38 cars are equipped with 12-volt system of electric equipment with grounding on a negative pole. Power supply of all lighting fixtures and electric units is carried out from the battery recharged from the generator of alternating current.

This head is devoted to the description of procedures of service and repair of some components of system of onboard electric equipment to which number besides the concrete components considered below also all lighting fixtures and electric accessories which are not connected directly with the engine belong. Besides, procedures of diagnostics of malfunctions of electric equipment of the general order are considered. Information on the battery, the generator and a starter is provided in the Head Sistemy of electric equipment of the engine.

When performing any works on repair and service of components of system of electric equipment it is necessary to disconnect without fail previously a negative wire from the battery in order to avoid receiving an electric trauma and/or ignition.
